With a 4.9-litre V8 hidden in a discreet business saloon, the E39 M5 is still a yardstick for understated super-saloons. In silver it is pure late-1990s class.
At 39.9 cm long this is a large, statement-size model made to be the centrepiece of a shelf, sideboard or desk. Press the hidden button and a soft, water-based vapour drifts out exactly where it should — the closest a display model gets to coming alive. The body is cast in metal, so at around 2.1 kg it has real weight in the hand, and the paint is laid on in smooth, even coats with crisp fine details.
